Run by Michael Eavis (of Glastonbury Festival) for eight years, Glastonbury Abbey Extravaganza is the new format for what used to be the "Classical Extravaganza".

Set in the grounds of Glastonbury Abbey, there have been many memorable performances. This unique event has grown in stature over the years and is already a high spot in the musical calendar of the South West. This year, for the first time, after last year’s sell out concert, Michael saw the chance to fulfil his dreams of putting on three nights at the Abbey.

It's a real occasion, with fireworks, lights, candelabra and picnics.

Friday July 30th
The Musical Extravaganza Weekend kicks off with a concert from local Somerset resident Van Morrison. This is the first time that Van Morrison will have played in the mystical parklands, beside the majestic ruins of the medieval Glastonbury Abbey and under the world famous Tor. Van Morrison has a great affection for the town of Glastonbury and famously included mention of the town’s Church of St John in his album Avalon Sunset.

Saturday July 31st
The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra will provide a programme of popular classical pieces. The RPO have often been quoted as saying that the Glastonbury event is one of their favourites. The location, the soloists, the stirring Pendyrus Male Choir, the water fountains choreographed by the Aquatique Show International of Strasbourg and the spectacular fireworks synchronised by Andrew Fielder all combine to make this one of the outstanding outdoor events of the summer. The crowds come to the classical evening in their thousands, to soak up the atmosphere and contribute to this colourful event with their picnics, flags, singing and even dancing to the orchestra.

Sunday August 1st Jools Holland will make a triumphant return after last year's event, which received wide-spread critical acclaim. Jools will play with his Rhythm and Blues Orchestra, a powerful and disciplined 18 piece band with a wonderful repertoire of instantly recognisable 20th century jazz and R n’ B classics. Jools will be accompanied by virtuoso drummer Gilson Lavis and the compelling vocalists Sam Brown and Ruby Turner.

There are a variety of ticket options: 1 evening will cost £25.00, 2 evenings £45.00 and 3 evenings £65.00. For party bookings, if you buy 15 tickets you get an extra one free. Children under 5 are admitted free, and for school children aged under 16, tickets will cost £10.
