review : day 1 - Madness

JULY 8TH 2004

Ozomatli had the task of opening Move 2004. They managed to put on a worthy performance despite the fact that there were very few people in the arena at this time. By the time The Stranglers were due on stage the arena had filled up to give it a cosy but spacious feel to the place.

The Stranglers as always impressed the crowd. Armed with their old hits such as ‘Golden Brown’ they managed to warm them up without too much problem. They included some new material, which seemed to be lapped up by the audience. By the end of the Stranglers set, it had began to spit with rain, which we had been expecting most of the day as it had been overcast.



Reggae legend Jimmy Cliff couldn’t even get the sun to come out with his angelic crystal clear voice and haunting lyrics. However he put on a cracking performance, and even if you have never heard of him you'll certainly recognise some of his songs. He is one of those artistes that you know his material but you just didn’t know it was him that did it!


Ocean Colour Scene put in as much effort as possible to try and whip the crowd into a frenzy of excitement in anticipation for the headline act Madness. Ocean Colour Scene even got the crowd singing along to a few of their better known songs such as ‘The Day We Caught The Train’ and ‘Profit In Peace’ which are true classics and are always guaranteed to make you sway and sing along.



The stage was then set for tonight’s headline act- Madness. These are one of those bands that you really love or hate with passion. Thankfully I have always liked their music and they didn’t disappoint the fans.



Suggs and co- looked like they genuinely wanted to be on stage playing to the crowd instead of just being there for the money. This was a nostalgic trip for most of the people in the audience who are old enough to remember the 80`s. Madness belted out every hit of theirs- from ‘One Step Beyond’ to ‘Driving In My Car’ as well as the fantastic ‘House Of Fun’. A truly magnificent performance by Madness.
