opera and orchestra Wed 5th May 04 News of two unusual performances for this summer's Glastonbury Festival have been revealed. Firstly, the English National Opera is to perform a full-blown version of Wagner's The Ride of the Valkyrie on the Pyramid Stage on Sunday - it's thought they'll play at around midday. There's an introductory blast of The Ride of the Valkyries theme (familiar from the film Apocalypse Now), followed by 50 minutes of thrilling sung drama between the principal performers and the warrior maidens. Also on Sunday, Liverpool band The Muffin Men - "a bunch of unruly Scousers who have spent the last decade bringing the songs of Frank Zappa to every rock dive in Europe" - lock horns with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra's contemporary music group, the 10:10 Ensemble, as When Worlds Collide. They mix surf music with Stravinsky, psychedelic rock with Varese, and cartoon music with cool jazz, to celebrate the creative energy of one of the twentieth century's greatest musicians. Check them out at around 3pm on the Jazzworld Stage. For the best rumour list of who's likely to be playing at Glastonbury, click here. published: 12:51 (GMT)
