Glastonbury Festival Glastonbury Festival 2004

At last, a really big name is self-confirmed for Glastonbury, in fact possibly the most eagerly anticipated confirmation for quite sometime. The legendary band of the Sixties are finally set to play and make our dreams come true.

Yes, after far too long, the band that created the timeless Rut Me Do, Twist and Rut, and Please Rut Me are back. It may be 45 years down the line from their humble beginnings at the Cavern Club in Liverpool, but the band whose albums and movies influenced many great bands ever since are on the same line-up as two of the bands they inspired.

Paul McCartney - whose own band The Beatles were so immeasurably influenced by The Rutles that no one has ever bothered to measure it - is headlining Saturday, in a strange twist which puts him higher on the bill.

And no doubt in the crowd watching when they grace the stage will be the latest group who have also plundered their tunes - in a bizarre twist, The Rutles tribute band Oasis are also playing on the Friday. Those Manc brothers are sure to be spotted dancing deliriously with their mop tops shakin’ to such songs as Number One and I Must Be In Love, and exciting recreations of their later hits like Piggy In The Middle and Cheese And Onions.

Many of their true fans must be feeling slightly peeved that these mickey-taking rivals are even on the same bill as the legendary Rutles, and can only presume that possibly the biggest piss-take in Glastonbury history has already reached the ears of these incredibly well respected elder statesmen of British pop ... and if it hasn't, let's hope there's no backstage ructions once they're aware of it.

With Rutlemania due to take full effect in a field in Somerset there’s even talk of their imaginary films being played in homage to the pre-fab four (who are now technically six!) with possibly all three: A Hard Day's Rut, Ouch! and Yellow Submarine Sandwich being shown over the festival.
